About Basic Skills Competition
The Little Champions Basic Skills events is just for children aged 4-7 years.
Children compete in a head-to-head, knock out style competition. 2 competitors perform a series of 3 different skills. At the completion of each skill the referee panel will award a point to the competitors who has performed the skill the best. The competitor who wins the most points after all 3 skills are performed will progress to the next round.
The following videos demonstrating the routines that may be used in competition. Routines 1 & 2 are for beginner students (White - Orange stripe). Routines 2 & 3 are for advanced students (Green stripe and above).
In addition, here is more information about the Basic Skills Event. Basic Skills Event (including the complete rules)
Using the videos is a great way to practice at home to prepare for the touranment.

Routine #2 (Skills 4-6)
Routine #3 (Skills 7-9)
About Kata Competition
In kata competition, competitors will perform a kata on their own. At the end of the performance the judges will present their scores. If possible, there will be 5 judges, in this case, the highest and lowest scores will be discarded and the remaining 3 scores will be added together to give the total score. If there are only 3 judges, all 3 scores will count towards the total.
After all compettiors have performed competitors will be ranked in order of placing. In the case of a large division, the top competitors will progress to the second round and will need to form a different kata.
When selecting kata to perform, students are encouraged to choose kata that they know well. It is generally not recommended to select a kata higher than their current level.

If you are a beginner student (Little Champion OR White Belt - Orange Belt White Stripe), we would probably recommend the following kata (videos below).

About Kumite Competition
Kumite is a head-to-head, knock out style of competition. Two competitors will "fight" and the winner will progress to the next round. Each fight is a 3 point match. If a competitor scores 3 points they will be declared the winner. If time runs out before a competitor scores 3 points, the competitor with the most points will be declared the winner. In the case where scores are tied, the match may go into extra-time and the first to score wins. If there is still no winner, the judges will select a winner based on their ability and fighting spirit.
In order to score a point competitors must deliver a good technique to the scoring areas, either making contact to the body gear or towards the head with the appropriate level of control (as outlined below). In addition, in order to score, techniques must demonstrate:
- Good form
- Right attitude
- Fighting spirit
- Awareness (zanshin)
- Timing
- Correct Target
Head contact & head gear:
- Masters & Adults (18 Yrs +) – Head gear will be worn. Controlled contact will be required to score a point.
- Juniors 14-17 Yrs – Head gear will be worn. Touch contact to the headgear is required to score a point.
- Juniors 10-13 Yrs – Head gear will be worn. Only non-contact techniques in close proximity to the headgear can score a point. Contact that causes injury, a penalty will be awarded.
- Juniors 9 Yrs + Under – No headgear is worn and no techniques targeting the head are allowed. Techniques aimed to the head will be penalised, even if they do not make contact. Points will only be awarded for controlled chudan attacks in these divisions.
Protective Equipment
In order to compete in kumite, protective equipment must be worn (NO EXCEPTIONS).
- You must provide your own: groin guards (male), mouth guards, gloves and shin/instep protectors.
- Head gear and body gear will be supplied if you do not have your own. No head gear is required for juniors 9yrs & under.
