At Sunshine Coat Karate, age, gender, fitness level and experience are no barrier. We have students in their 60's who practice karate. We have a mix of both male and female participants and instructors. We have students of varying fitness levels. If you have the desire to learn, we can help you gradually develop yourself and your skills.

Let's face it, being a parent is a tough job. I was so lucky to find Sunshine Coast Karate, who have been the most amazing and supportive coaches for my children and I for 18 years now.
As 5th Dan instructors and world champions of the Chito-Ryu style of karate, Senseis Martin and Sandra, teach karate with great skill, positive encouragement and in an energetic, motivating and fun environment. They are also subtle and influential partners in developing those positive values and real life skills which are fundamental to successfully navigating that transition from teenager to young adult.

They stood up for what they thought was right and to school bullies, both for themselves and others. They proudly represented their state and country in competition, by having the spirit to participate and experience, not win at all costs. And most importantly built the fortitude and resilience to make their way through life's challenges with a healthy serve of self-esteem and independence.

My 7 year old son and I joined about 10 months ago and my only regret is not having joined earlier. A couple of months prior to joining, my doctor advised that I was a prime candidate for type 2 diabetes and cardiac complications... needless to say, something had to be done.
I'm now 15kg lighter, much much fitter, healthier and well on my way to my weight loss goal of 25kg. Yes, I've had to do the hard work but Sunshine Coast Karate from the very beginning have provided a supportive, well structured, no-nonsense environment and training program that has given me the opportunity to be where I am today while learning a traditional style of karate.
My son loves the training and has benefited in countless ways. Parents are encouraged to train alongside their little ones which is what I do on top of my own classes, giving my son and me special bonding time doing something we both love. As soon as my daughter is old enough she will be along for the free trial as I'm sure she will love the fun classes too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have any prior martial arts experience?
No martial arts experience is required. Just an open mind to learn. For some people it can be easier to start with no experience. Whether you have experience or not, our instructors and more experienced members will do their best to help you to form a strong foundation with your basics.
Do I have to do a long term training commitment?
Not at all, the choice is yours. After your trial you will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of different program options. Depending upon your circumstances, you may choose to get started with a fortnightly option that you can cancel any time. Or, you might choose to make a 12 month commitment to save on your fees.
Do I need to get fit before I start a martial arts program?
You don't need to be fit before starting. Actually martial arts is a great way to get fit whilst developing some great skills. It is recommended that you go your own pace, do what you can do and take breaks if required. Your fitness and martial arts skills will gradually improve and before long you'll be feeling great. If you have any medical concerns, it is recommended that you seek professional guidance before starting a program.
Do I have to hit people?
One of the things that karate teaches is practical self defence. This is something that you cannot learn without actually doing it; in the same way that you cannot learn how to drive a car just by reading a book on the subject.
Of course, just like learning anything new, it's a process. You won't do full-contact training on your first lesson. In fact, you'll never have to do full-contact training at all (unless you choose to), but in time with some controlled-contact training, you will acquire the skills that you need to be confident in a self defence situation and learn how to respond appropriately.?
At first it will be a little uncomfortable and it will be a conscious effort to do things in the right way, but with time and practice your abilities will become instinctive.
Can my friends and I take classes together?
Yes, training with friends and family is a great idea. Starting a training program with others adds another dimension to your training in terms of accountability to each other. This accountability can be a great asset to get you both beyond any challenges which may arise. Training together will also strengthen your friendship and make the training a whole lot of fun. In the early days, when you don't know many people, having a friend or a family member with you can provide a little bit of comfort and familiarity until you establish new friendships within the training environment.
Once I decide to get started with a 5 lesson trial, how does it work?
Once you have purchased your 5 lesson trial, you'll book in for your first class and one of our team will contact you to confirm your class and answer any questions that you may have. If you are keen to continue your 5 lesson trial after your first class, you will receive your uniform or you can request a refund if it's not for you.
