Little Champions Karate (4–7 years)

Skills for life, disguised as a whole lot of fun. Balance, focus, listening and confidence for 4 to 7 year olds, in a class built just for them.

What your child gains

Healthy habits that last

In addition to real self-defence skills, your Little Champion develops healthy habits that help them succeed at school, be helpful at home and take responsibility for their actions. The program was developed by professional child educators, professional martial artists and parents working together, to give children a fun, interesting and rewarding start in martial arts.

Focus

Listening, following instructions and finishing what they start.

Balance & coordination

Stronger, steadier bodies, and better control of them.

Memory

Remembering sequences, Japanese terms and their own progress.

Self-discipline

Waiting their turn, trying again, and being proud of the effort.

Teamwork

Working with partners and cheering each other on.

Confidence

Standing tall, speaking up and trying new things.

What happens in a Little Champions class

Classes run for 40 minutes, after school and on Saturday mornings. Each one mixes games, karate basics and partner activities, with plenty of encouragement. Everyone learns some Japanese along the way: counting, greetings and the names of the techniques.

There are no formal grading tests in Little Champions. Instead there are 7 belt colours, and at each belt your child earns 4 tips on their belt, one in each key area: body awareness, mind awareness, karate basics, and self-defence and kumite.

Parents are welcome to watch from the viewing area, or to jump in line next to their favourite Little Champion.

Train together

Your kids will love it. So will you.

Our children are like mirrors. When you train alongside your child, you both learn, you both grow, and you show them what effort and respect look like. It’s a win–win.

What parents say

In their words

After exploring 3 different martial arts studios, my son ultimately decided on Sunshine Coast Karate. The distinct approach they have towards children stood out to us—there’s no unnecessary pressure, and he consistently leaves each class excited anticipating the next one.

Ana S. Parent
My three children absolutely love attending the classes at Sunshine Coast Karate. It has only been 5 months, but they have felt welcomed and comfortable from the get go. They get excited on “karate days” and are always eager to get to class.

It has also done wonders to teach (and show) my energetic 6yr old about focusing to work towards your goals.
Kristy G. Parent

I can’t recommend SCK enough. I attribute my son’s confidence in himself and focus for his karate & life goals to his practice. He started at 5yrs and still loves his karate community at 14yrs.

Heidi H. Parent

Our grandson has been attending Sunshine Coast Karate for the past 2 years and has learned respect discipline he has also gained confidence strength and how to participate as a group these are qualities that will help him with all aspects of his life he also has a great time the team are so encouraging and patient we would highly recommend.

— Written 12 month prior —

My Grandson has been attending classes for 12 months and is loving it he has gained confidence strength and respect which are so important and looks forward too classes every week….cant wait too see how much he learns this year and how much more focus and flexibility he gains.

Gail M. Parent

Just wanted to say a very big thank you to all the staff at Sunshine Coast Karate, we have loved every minute and felt so welcomed.

My son found it difficult to find an activity he wanted to stick with or enjoyed as quite shy and nervous starting something new, however he just loves going to Karate and always has a smile on his face.

Renae R. Parent

Our son has been part of the Sunshine Coast Karate community for 4 years now. It has taught him focus, strength, discipline, and has instilled him with confidence in all aspects of his life and his development of sense of self. Now that he is a little older and committed to his karate, his leadership skills are also being nurtured by the amazing team at SCK. This is a place that develops the whole child and we feel immense gratitude for this inspiring influence in our son’s life.

Questions

Questions parents ask

Anything else you’d like to know? Give us a call, we’re happy to help.

Is 4 too young to start?

No. Little Champions is built for 4 to 7 year olds: short, active classes, lots of games, and instructors who know how to work with young children.

Will karate make my child aggressive?

No. If anything, it has the opposite effect. Karate begins and ends with respect for yourself, for others and for your surroundings. Over time, most children become more respectful, more caring and more patient.

My child needs help with behaviour. Can karate help?

Yes. Self-control is one of the things karate builds. Like any new habit, it takes a little practice.

My child is shy. Can they start with a friend?

Yes. Training with a friend or family member is a great idea. It gives a little comfort in the early days, and you keep each other going.

Can parents train with their kids?

Of course! We love it when parents train with their kids; in fact, we encourage it. It’s a great way to lead by example. Parents can train alongside their child in any Little Champions or Karate Kids class, and parents who are also members can train with their own kids for free.

What should my child wear?

Comfortable clothes they can move in. We train barefoot, so bring shoes for the car park, and a water bottle.
