Tournament Squad

The Tournament Squad is designed for students who are passionate about competition as well as those who are curious about tournaments and want to explore their potential. This program provides specialised training to help students improve their skills, gain confidence, and experience the excitement of competition.

Each year, your local committee hosts at least two local tournaments, with opportunities to compete on the Gold Coast, interstate, and even internationally.

For Parents: Competing isn’t just about winning—it’s about learning to set goals, handle challenges, and grow through experience. In tournaments, students will face victories and setbacks, both of which help build resilience, sportsmanship, and a strong work ethic. Whether your child dreams of becoming a champion or simply wants to challenge themselves, the squad teaches valuable life skills like perseverance, discipline, and the ability to perform under pressure—qualities that benefit them far beyond the dojo.

For Teens and Adults: The squad offers a chance to refine your kata and kumite, train alongside like-minded peers, and challenge yourself in a competitive setting. Whether you’re aiming for high-level competition or just exploring your potential, the squad provides expert coaching and a pathway for growth.

Tournament Squad classes are held on Friday afternoon/evening at the following times:

  • 4:30-6:00pm
Junior Squad (U/13 yrs) – Kata & Kumite
  • 6:00-6:30pm
    OPTIONAL - Weapons Squad (8 yrs +, Blue Belt +) – Bo & Sai
** Only those interested in competing in weapons events at tournaments should join
  • 6:30-8:00pm
Senior Squad (Teens & Adults) – Kata & Kumite

Squad training complements basic classes and is not a substitute. Students are required to attend at least two basic classes per week alongside squad training. It’s also recommended that students complete their first grading before joining.

Weapons Training

Weapons training is a valuable supplement to your karate practice, offering a deeper understanding of traditional martial arts and improving coordination, control, and focus. For students serious about developing a well-rounded skill set, this program provides the opportunity to train in kobujutsu (traditional weapons) and earn separate rankings in addition to their karate progress.

For Parents: Weapons training challenges students to refine their precision, patience, and discipline while learning the rich history and application of traditional martial arts weapons. It builds confidence and problem-solving skills as students navigate new techniques, reinforcing focus and self-control—qualities that carry over into everyday life.

For Teens & Adults: This program enhances your martial arts journey by developing weapon-handling skills that improve body awareness, fluidity, and technique. Training with weapons strengthens coordination and adaptability, offering a new dimension to your practice that deepens both skill and understanding.

Who Can Join?
Weapons training is available only to teen and adult students who hold at least a blue belt (7th kyu) and have an unlimited membership.

Class Schedule:

  • Monday & Wednesday: 7:00-8:00 PM

For more information, speak with an instructor. If you’re looking to challenge yourself and take your martial arts journey to the next level, weapons training is an exciting and rewarding path.

Leadership Training

The Leadership Program at Sunshine Coast Karate is a gateway to international instructor qualifications in Chito-Ryu Karate-Do and a chance to accelerate personal growth. For students at green belt (9th kyu) and above, it’s an invitation to step into a role that builds confidence, leadership skills, and character—both on and off the dojo floor.

For Parents: This program provides a structured way for your child to grow as a leader, boosting their self-esteem, responsibility, and ability to work as part of a team. It’s more than just karate—it’s about preparing them for life by developing skills like communication, organisation, and teamwork in a safe, supportive environment.

For Teens and Adults: Becoming part of the leadership team empowers you to serve as a mentor and role model while deepening your understanding of karate. You’ll gain valuable skills in public speaking, team management, and teaching, all while building a stronger connection to the dojo community. Whether you’re a teen looking to build life skills for the future or an adult wanting to give back while continuing to grow, the leadership program offers a rewarding experience.

With four progressive stages, leaders grow at their own pace, earning badges that reflect their journey. Leadership participants assist in classes, lead small groups, and inspire others while balancing their own training. This program isn’t just about karate—it’s about becoming your best self.

Participation in the leadership program is only available to students with an unilmited memerhsip.  Learn more about upgrading your membership (if required).
