World-Class Karate on the Sunshine Coast: Hosting Masters from Japan

At Sunshine Coast Karate, we often talk about the importance of “continuous learning and refinement”. We believe that to be the best students and teachers we can be, we must constantly return to the source.

Last weekend, we had the distinct honour of doing exactly that right here in Maroochydore.

We were thrilled to welcome Sandaime Soke (the head of our style) and Higuchi Kyoshi all the way from Japan for a blockbuster weekend of Chito-Ryu Karate and Kobujutsu training.

Going to the Source (Without Leaving the Coast) For three intense days—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—our dojo was buzzing.

It is a rare privilege to receive direct instruction from such high-caliber teachers without having to board a plane. Sandaime Soke and Higuchi Kyoshi shared an immense wealth of knowledge, pushing every student to sharpen their technique and deepen their understanding of traditional martial arts.

Despite the challenging Queensland heat, the energy on the floor was undeniable. It was a perfect example of our core philosophy: cultivating mind, body, and spirit together.

A Community United
One of the most powerful aspects of the weekend was seeing the strength of the wider Chito-Ryu family. The mats were packed not just with our own Sunshine Coast Karate members, but with dedicated instructors and students from:

  • Coastal Karate Club (Currimundi)
  • BrisKarate
  • Gold Coast Chito-Ryu Karate

Seeing students from across South East Queensland training side-by-side was a reminder that karate is about community and belonging. We are individuals on our own paths, but we grow faster when we support one another.

Celebrating Success
The weekend wasn’t just about training; it was about testing ourselves. The hard work culminated in successful Dan gradings in Kobujutsu (traditional weapons practice).

To step up for a grading under the watchful eye of the head of the style requires courage, preparation, and “discipline balanced with heart”. We want to extend a massive congratulations to everyone who stepped up to the challenge. (Stay tuned—we will be sharing full details and photos of these achievements in a separate post soon!)

Join a Dojo with Global Connections
Events like this remind us that Sunshine Coast Karate is part of something bigger. Whether you are a “Little Champion” (4-7yrs) just starting out or a black belt refining your art, you are walking a path that connects you to a global history of excellence.
