At Sunshine Coast Karate, we often talk about the “Black Belt Journey.” To a new student, that journey can look like a steep mountain—a peak so high you can’t even see the top. But yesterday, we were reminded that reaching the summit isn’t about giant leaps; it’s about the “steady climb.”
Yesterday was Tim’s Junior Black Belt practice grading. It was a moment of immense pride for our instructors, but it also invited us to look back at how far he has come.
From the Little Monkeys Room…
Many of our long-term members will remember Tim as a “Little Champion” with a yellow stripe on his white belt. Back then, the dojo was a second home in a very literal sense. After his own classes, we’d often find Tim tucked away in the Little Monkeys Room, lost in a book, quietly waiting for his older brother to finish his training.

He was the boy who won colouring competitions with the same focus he now brings to his kata. These “quiet moments”—the waiting, the reading, the showing up week after week—were the invisible building blocks of his character.

Playing the Long Game
Now 15, Tim’s life is much fuller. Between the academic pressures of high school and a schedule that rarely slows down, it would have been easy to say, “I don’t have time.”
But Tim has chosen to play the long game. In a world that demands “instant results” and “overnight success,” Tim has simply continued to chip away. He hasn’t looked for shortcuts. He has understood a truth that few his age do: Consistency is a superpower.
Watching Tim on the mats yesterday was a privilege. He is no longer just “the little brother” waiting in the wings. He is a young man standing tall, following a path blazed by both his Dad and his older brother—both of whom are Black Belts.
This isn’t just about karate; it’s about a family culture that values persistence over speed. As the saying goes:
“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.”
The Belt and the Character
Success in the dojo isn’t reserved for the “most athletic” or the “fastest.” It belongs to those who keep showing up.
Tim, the physical Black Belt will soon be tied around your waist, but the truth is, we’ve been seeing a Black Belt in you for a long time now. The belt is simply catching up to the character you’ve spent nearly a decade building.
We can’t wait to see you officially join your father and brother in the Black Belt ranks.
Are you ready to start your own journey? At Sunshine Coast Karate, we believe every child has the potential to become a leader through the steady climb of martial arts.
