Both Days Count

“We do not rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.” Archilochus

Some days training feels easy, some days it doesn’t, and both count.

I love watching how those little steps add up, week after week. A stance that feels a bit steadier. A kata that suddenly flows. A student who walks into a grading feeling nervous, takes a deep breath, and surprises themselves.

That’s what this quote is about. When something important happens, like a grading, a tournament, or a moment when you need to keep yourself safe, there isn’t much time to think. We fall back on what we’ve practised. That’s why we come back to the basics again and again in the dojo.

The harder days matter too

It’s easy to feel good about training when everything clicks. But the days when you’re tired, when something feels tricky, or when you’d rather be somewhere else are often the days that build the most. Showing up anyway is a skill in itself.

For our Little Champions, this is a big part of Focus, one of the core skills we practise in every class. For teens and adults, it’s the steady confidence that carries into work, study and everyday life.

Something to take with you

Next time training feels tough, remember what got you through last time. Maybe it was a deep breath, a friend beside you, or simply deciding to keep going. That memory is part of your training too.

If you’ve been thinking about trying karate, your first class is free. We’d love to welcome you to the dojo.
