Our story

Sunshine Coast Karate is a family owned and operated karate school. It was established in 2000, when founding instructors Martin & Sandra Phillips moved to the Sunshine Coast from Newcastle, NSW.

For the first few years, classes were held in community halls across the central Sunshine Coast, including Maroochydore, Bli Bli, Kawana Waters, Coolum and Buddina. In 2003 we opened a fully equipped, full-time dojo in Maroochydore, to better serve our growing community.

What we believe

Karate begins and ends with respect

It was our goal very early on to build a dojo community that could energise, support, inspire and empower individuals and families. Our community continues to grow and strengthen every year, and it’s built on respect, compassion and patience, for ourselves and for each other.

  • Community and family: families training together, and the dojo as a family.
  • Growth and learning: a learner’s mindset, at every belt.
  • Challenge: every class is a small challenge you get through. It adds up.

Our style

Traditional Chito-Ryu karate

We teach Chito-Ryu Karate-do, a traditional Japanese style. We’re the South East Queensland headquarters for the style, and a Karate4Life dojo.

The study of Chito-Ryu Karate-do is the perfect pursuit to bring about positive change in your life. There’s always more to explore: basic training, forms (kata), applications, sparring, weapons (kobujutsu), throwing techniques and tournament training. There’s also meditation, breathing, posture, strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.
